Most days of Govardhan Puja falls on the next day after Diwali Puja and it is celebrated as the day when Lord Krishna defeated Lord Indra. Sometimes there may be a difference of one day between Diwali and Govardhan Puja. In religious texts, the celebration of Govardhan Puja is celebrated on the Pratipada Tithi of Kartik month. Depending on the commencement time of Pratipada, the day of Govardhan Puja may fall one day before the new moon day on the Hindu calendar.
What is the meaning of Govardhan
Literally translated from Sanskrit, `Go` means cow and `Vardhan` means nutrition `, and it is not surprising that during the festival of Govardhan Puja, the sacred animal, the cow, is worshipped in the Hindu community.
Mythology associated with Govardhan festival
According to Hindu mythology, people of Gokul used to worship Lord Indra, who is also known as the god of rain. However, Lord Krishna asked people to worship Annakut Hill or Govardhan Parvat, which they thought was a more powerful god. Govardhan Parbat is often worshipped by devotees who seek nourishment and protection from harsh situations in life. Parbat is also revered for providing food and shelter to its devotees when required.
After the advice of Lord Krishna, the people of Gokul started worshipping Govardhan Pahari instead of Lord Indra. On seeing this, Lord Indra became very angry and started showering heavily in Gokul. Lord Krishna intervened to save the people by lifting the Govardhan hill with his little finger and covering the people of Gokul beneath it.
Rituals of Govardhan festival
Since the festival of Annakut comes very close to the Diwali festival, the rituals of both festivals are also closely linked. During Annakut, similar to the Diwali festival, the first three days are days of prayer, which are performed to sanctify wealth and invite more prosperity to the family. Devotees pray to Lord Krishna and express gratitude to the Lord.
Govardhan Puja Vidhi
Often confused as being the same, Govardhan Pooja and Annakut are actually different. Govardhan Puja is a major ritual performed during Annakut; i.e.; Govardhan Puja is actually only one section of the day-long Annakut festival.
There are many rituals for Govardhan Puja, which are practiced by various communities. One such tradition is the idol of God (usually of Lord Krishna). The idol is made of cow dung, which is then placed with beautifully decorated earthen diyas (called diyas) and candles. Devotees also pray to Lord Govardhan. Many families also make rangoli (decorative art made of coloured powder, colored sand and flower petals) outside their homes.
The idols and sculptures of the deity are also bathed in milk, and beautiful new clothes are worn, which are decorated with precious stones and pearls.
