Jitiya of katha in detail
According to this legend, Jimutvahana was the king of Gandharvas. Jimutvahana was not satisfied with becoming the ruler and as a result he gave all the responsibilities of his kingdom to his brothers and went to the jungle to serve his father.
One day when Jimutvahana was roaming in the jungle, he saw an old woman crammed. Seeing the plight of that woman, he did not stop and asked the old woman the reason for grief. On this, the old woman said that she is a woman of Nagvansh and that she has only one son.
He said that the nag has promised the bird king Garuda that every day a snake will go to him as food and he will satisfy his hunger from him. After hearing her problem, Jimutvahana assured her that he would bring her son back alive.
Then Jeemuth Vahana himself ceased to be the fodder of Garuda. Then Garuda comes and grabs the red cloth covered with Jimutvahana with his fingers and climbs the rock.
Garuda thinks why he is not responding to what he caught. Then he asks Jimutvahana about them. Then Garuda, delighted with the heroism and benevolence of Jimutvahana, promises to take no more sacrifices from the snakes.
It is believed that since then Jitiya Vrat is observed for the longevity and welfare of children.
JivitPutrika katha
According to legend, when there was a battle of Mahabharata, an elephant named Ashwatthama was killed; but the news spread around that Ashwathama, son of Dronacharya, was murdered. Hearing this, Ashwatthama`s father Dronacharya threw up his arms in the mourning of his son.
Then Dhrishtadyumna, Draupadi`s brother, killed him. The fire of vengeance was burning in Ashwathama`s heart due to his father`s death. To avenge his father`s death, he reached the Pandavas` camp in the darkness of the night.
Seeing the five sons of Pandavas sleeping, he considered them Pandavas and killed their five sons. As a result, the Pandavas got very angry. Then Lord Krishna snatched the gem from Ashwathama, after which Ashwathama became angry with the Pandavas and used Brahmastra to kill the child in Uttara`s womb.
Lord Krishna knew very well that it was impossible to stop Brahmastra. But he considered it necessary to protect the son of Uttara. So Lord Krishna collected the fruits of all his virtues and gave it to the child in the womb of Uttara, as a result of which the child was resurrected.
This child grew up and became King Parikshit. Due to death and resurrection in the womb, it got its name as Jivitputrika. Since then, Jivitputrika Vrat is observed for the longevity and health of the child.
