What is Pitru Paksha and why is Pitru Paksha celebrated? The Paksha of Bhadrapada month from the full moon day of Ashwin month is called `Pitru Paksha` or Shraddha. In this Paksha, on whatever day a person dies, his Shraddha is performed by the sons and grandsons of that deceased person.

In Hindu culture, Shraddha has special significance in Pitru Paksha. Shraddha means ritual performed with devotion, which gives satisfaction to our ancestors. These actions are related to our ancestors who help us overcome adversities in our lives. This help reaches us through `Pragya` i.e. intuition.

The Paksha of Bhadrapada month from the full moon day of Ashwin month is called Pitru Paksha or `Shraddha Paksha`. In this Paksha, on the day when a person dies, Shraddha is performed by the son and grandson of that deceased person. In this Shraddha banquet, forefathers are enjoyed with a variety of delicious dishes. By doing this, the ancestors get fulfilled and their family is blessed with all the pleasures like longevity, health, wealth and heaven.

Why is Pitru Paksha celebrated? For this, Markandeya Rishi says that from the sunrise on the Pitru Paksha Tithi of Pran Shraddha, our ancestors come and sit at the door of their sons and grandsons in the subtle form, in the hope that their sons and grandsons will satisfy them with food. But even after sunset, when the ancestors do not get food, they get frustrated and angry and cursed and return to their Pitrloka.

Therefore, it is stated in the scriptures that it is necessary to perform Shraddha in Pitru Paksha. It is more beneficial to please your ancestors like deities. The scriptures speak of atoning sins by performing bodily rituals, pindaan, tarpan, shraddha, ekadash, sapindakaran, ashochadi judgment, karmavipak etc.

Pitru Paksha i.e. Shraddha Paksha has great significance in Hinduism. On this day ancestors are commemorated and their blessings are taken. Very few people will know who celebrated Pitru Paksha first in the world?

The first mention of Pitru Paksha, that is, Shraddha, is found in the Mahabharata period, where Bhishma Pitamah has told many things about Shraddha to Yudhishthir. Along with this, he has also described how the tradition of Pitru Paksha or Shraddha started and how this tradition gradually began to reach all people.

According to Mahabharata, the first person who preached Shraddha to Maharishi Nimi was Mahatapaswi Atri. After this, Maharishi Nimi started doing Shraddha. Seeing the Maharishi, other sages also started performing Shraddha to provide food to their ancestors. With which all the gods and their ancestors started getting the food of Shraddha continuously.

Continuously getting food for Pitru Paksha or Shraddha caused indigestion to the deities and ancestors and this started causing them trouble. To get rid of this problem, everyone went to Brahmaji and narrated their suffering to him. Hearing the problem of gods and ancestors, Brahma Ji told them that only Agnidev will do their welfare.

Agnidev told the gods and ancestors that from now on we will all eat together in Shraddha. By staying with me, your indigestion will also be removed. He was delighted to hear this. Since then Shraddha`s food is first served to Agnidev, only then is given to the gods and ancestors.

It is mentioned in the scriptures that Pind Daan Brahma Rakshasta given to ancestors in the Havan does not even corrupt it. Therefore, seeing Agnidev in Shraddha, the demons also leave from there. Agni purifies everything. Gods and ancestors are delighted by receiving sacred food.

Pindadan should be given first to the father, then to the grandfather and then to the great-grandfather. This is the method of Shraddha mentioned in the scriptures. At that time you are giving Pinddaan, chant Gayatri mantra carefully and chant “Somay Pitramate Swaha”.
